Corazon Center-Educational Support for the Weavers' Children
Corazon Center is an innovative learning environment to enhance leadership skills for the children and young people associated with the women’s cooperative, Corazon de Mujer (Heart of Woman. The women of this cooperative are survivors of Guatemala’s 36-year civil war. There are 20 women in the cooperative and approximately 45 children will be served through the center’s programs. Corazon de Mujer are the principle weavers for Corazon Scarves and are featured in the 2011 calendar, "Threads." Summer Enrichment Program: Operation Costs: $900 This is a program for school-age to adolescents and takes place during their summer breaks. Themes for Summer Enrichment Program: Personal safety; Math, Self-esteem and Creative Expression; Spanish Linguistics. Women’s Workshop: Mothers will learn how to better support their children’s education. Operation Costs: $85 Self-care workshops for adult women with an emphasis on self-esteem, self-expression and stretches and exercise to increase health and wellness. Operation Costs: $75 Year-Long Preschool: Thirty percent of Guatemalan children do not finish 1st grade. We hope to have a preschool up and operating in February 2012 so children can have the skills they need to succeed in school and don’t end up in child labor situations because they are not in school.
